[Dean didn't protest the laptop being stolen back, as he'd already yanked out Dad's notebook and was flipping through its well-worn pages, a fixed look of determination on his face. At one point, his eyes lit up with discovery and he leaned back, slamming a finger onto the page] Just like I thought. [He whirled it around so Sam could see, tapping his finger twice over a picture that was paperclipped to the page.] Sturgis, South Dakota: some kid named Jake McCoy, found with the same marks, back in '98. [His eyes slid further down that page and across the adjacent one] Another one - in Shamrock, Texas, that Dad tracked down, happened a few years earlier.
[His eyes lifted from the page, one brow arching pointedly as he made eye contact with Sam] 'ccording to Dad's notes, there's a long trail of these going back for decades, and he thought the cause was something supernatural. [His voice dropped in volume the slightest bit] Maybe even the thing that went after Mom kind of supernatural. [Both brows raised in a brief shrug at his brother, hoping he was going to take the bait.]
[Sam wasn't sure if he was being told something he wanted to hear or if it was really lining up that easily into something tangible, something they could at least figure out. Having the pattern was a start.]
Could be a chance to unearth something of a solid lead on Dad too. [Look, he knew that Dean was dedicated to that search and if it whatever was leading them onto a new case would push them toward their father - Sam might not be thrilled with the idea, but he wasn't going to not admit it could help.]
If this thing has to do with Mom, he'd have his hand in it too.
[Dean flipped the page, and a smirk worked its way onto his features] Looks like he already did. [He ran a hand down the inner binding so the page would stay open. There were three newspaper clippings cut out there: "Graduate of '00 Found Dead" "Body of Young Man found In State Park" and "Former Honor Student's Body Found in State Park". Each one had notes written next to it in their Dad's hand writing, and each article was labeled BELLEFLEUR, OREGON.] Dad already went out there when this... [He glanced down at the latest dated article] 'Ray Soames' kid showed up dead coupla years ago. Looks like his leads ran dry before he could figure out what was killing 'em, but if Dad caught wind of a fourth case now ...
[He let that hang in the air, implying Sam was right about their odds of running into him] So what are we stickin' around here for?
[Sam had been pretty much implying the same thing, but if Dean needed to be the brains of the operation he wasn't going to start up an argument about how that was what he meant. Instead he just listened and nodded along.
When Dean posed the question of why they were still sitting there Sam almost mentioned the food, then he remembered what the food was and shrugged.]
[Well, that was progress right there. Didn't even have to make Sammy promises about coming back to check on Jess when they got the chance. Maybe he was starting to think straight about this after all. Their best chances were with Dad.
All they'd have to do is find the man.
And, Dean couldn't help but think, make sure he hadn't gotten himself into some kind of trouble he needed help with along the way.
He grabbed his still wrapped burger and slid out of the seat.]
[He'll pack up his things and slide his laptop into his bag, leaving his food behind, and follow his brother. It's not exactly the most ideal situation, but if it'll keep Dean someone occupied for long enough, Sam figures he might get a few hours to himself to go over the notes he's been making about Jess and what else could've happened to her.
It wasn't about finding the next case for him, it was about making sure that eventually there wouldn't be a next case.]
