Scene 1 | Joey's Diner, Palo Alto, CA

[It'd been a week since the night Sam called Dean with the words 'Jess is missing'.

Dean hadn't been overly concerned at first, figuring Sammy's paranoia was getting the better of him. But a couple days later, things had blown up into a straight up missing person case, when she hadn't shown up to classes, come back to the apartment, or checked in with any friends or family. Dean had grudgingly stuck around Sam's place, trying to keep out of the line of investigation when the cops started poking around. His plan had to be take off, go looking for Dad alone again since Sam had made it clear he wasn't riding shotgun on that particular roadtrip.

But he couldn't leave his brother in the lurch like this, not while he was freaking out over Jess' disappearance. Maybe Sam found it easy to leave family hanging in a time of need, but that wasn't his style.

But a week of fruitless searching had it made it clear that whatever had happened to Jessica wasn't a clear cut case of... anything. There were no signs of a break-in, she hadn't taken any of her stuff, her car was still parked in the garage, and no one had seen her since she went home from class the same evening Sam would later get back.

It was like she'd vanished into thin air.

The only lead they had, which wasn't a lead at all, was some neighbors complaining about bright lights appearing outside their window, but none of them could agree on what the lights had been. Some thought they were just passing high beams that had reflected through their curtains. Others said they hadn't even seen anything.

Dean had his own theories, but he didn't think Sam would like any of them.

He let his brother grab them a booth while he went up to grab their food when the order up bell rang at the little diner on the outskirts of the college town, grinning at the waitress behind the bar, and tossing her a wink, before turning to head back to their table. He tossed Sam's wrapped burger right onto his keyboard, and slid into the seat across from him.]

Dig in. And put that thing away already. You're ruinin' my appetite.
